Save the date! The Draghi and Letta reports to the UPF
Next Monday, May 19, 2025 at 6 p.m., a session will take place in the Mercè Rodoreda Auditorium on the UPF Ciutadella campus to present the main conclusions of the Draghi Report and the Letta Report.
Initially, the planned date was Monday, April 28, 2025, but due to the general blackout, it had to be delayed.
Both economic reports, within the framework of the European Union, are considered relevant for several reasons. It is also a unique opportunity to learn about their contents through highly qualified people. From the BEST Foundation, in collaboration with the UPC and the UPF, we present this event as a meeting to reflect on them.
The event will be hold by Mr. Joaquim Coello Brufau (Chair of the Fundació BEST), Mr. Josep Lluís Oller, Doctor of Economic Sciences and Mr. Guillem López Casasnovas, Professor of Economics at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra de Barcelona.
The report Much More Than a Market by Enrico Letta, published in April 2024, offers an in-depth analysis of the European single market and proposes strategies to strengthen it in front of current challenges. Some of the key issues highlighted in the report are:
- Introducing a “fifth freedom”: adding a new freedom to the single market focused on research, innovation, and education to boost the EU’s global competitiveness.
- Reducing the regulatory burden for SMEs: simplifying regulations and recognizing the fundamental role of small and medium-sized enterprises in the European economy.
- Creating a Union for savings and investment: mobilizing private savings towards investments that support the green and digital transitions and improve the EU’s competitiveness.
- Revising competition rules: adapting competition policy to allow consolidation of companies in strategic sectors and facilitate the creation of European champions able to compete globally.
- Improving single market governance: reinforcing the implementation of single market regulations to ensure their effectiveness and consistency across Member States.
The report The Future of European Competitiveness by Mario Draghi, presented in September 2024, provides a detailed analysis of the economic challenges facing the European Union and proposes measures to revitalise its global competitiveness. Some of the key points from the report include:
• Mobilising significant investments: proposing an additional annual investment of €800 billion, equivalent to 4.5% of the EU’s GDP, to close the gap with the economies of the United States of America and China.
• Accelerating technological innovation: removing barriers that hinder the market deployment of innovations, attracting funding, and improving human capital qualifications.
• Reducing energy costs: developing a joint plan for decarbonisation and competitiveness to lower energy prices while maintaining the commitment to the green transition.
• Reducing strategic dependencies: decreasing the EU’s reliance on critical sectors such as raw materials and semiconductors, and promoting an “economic foreign policy” to ensure access to these resources.
• Strengthening the European defence industry: fostering greater integration and cooperation in the defence sector to optimise investments and reinforce the continent’s security.
The proposals in the Letta and Draghi reports have significant implications for the fields of engineering and economic analysis. Therefore, to better understand the opportunities they present for the professional future, we invite you to attend the presentation of both reports at the end of this April.
Register and reserve your place in the Mercè Rodoreda Auditorium on the UPF Ciutadella Campus.
